Action: UNHRC

Shirley Anne Haber has e-mailed the following action message concerning the UNHRC:

Dear Friends,

The last week of the UN Commission on Human Rights ended as it began with Israel being singled out unfairly. BUT this week the Commission outdid itself by removing 'antisemitism' from a resolution on Durban - the Conference AGAINST Racism! Antisemitism no longer rates as a serious form of racism according to the Commission! As well, the Commission could not form a consensus on a definition of 'democracy' or 'human rights' - this is the Commission on 'Human Rights'! There is no question that this agency of the United Nations has proven itself irrelevant and dysfunctional during the past 6 weeks. The Commission is the epitome of antisemitism and should be chastized!

Ottawa, 29 April 2003

Gentlemen,

I am writing to protest the recent proceedings of the UNHRC.

In her article in the April 27, 2003, issue of the Chicago Sun-Times, ANNE BAYEFSKY states, inter alia:

"...[A]n attack has taken place on any mention of "anti-Semitism." Last week, procedural maneuvers, led by South Africa and the African group of UN states, with the support of 28 of the 53 members of the commission, resulted in the deletion of "anti-Semitism" from the resolution on Durban, racism, xenophobia and related intolerance."

Like the UN itself, the UNHRC has proved itself irrelevant and dysfunctional. It is time to dismantle the UN and all its affiliates, a task to which I intend to devote a great deal of energy.

Sincerely yours,

Joseph Alexander Norland
