News from OLD EUROPE

Donald Rumsfeld has given the world several memorable terms, not the least being “the so called occupied territories”. We now have the latest in the series, “old Europe” , as reported by the Washington Post:
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Wednesday called France and Germany the "Old Europe," out of touch with the "New Europe."
And as though the EU was determined to confirm this observation, here are three news items that appeared almost side-by-side on Saturday, January 25, 2003.

Item 1 - An AP report via the Jerusalem Post:
Thousands of people across Germany demonstrated Saturday against a possible war against Iraq, blocking the road to a NATO base and picketing American facilities.
Item 2 - a report from WorldNetDaily, via IMRA:
Time is running out for the European members of Parliament to launch a probe into the longstanding claim that the Palestinian Authority has misused European taxpayers' money to finance terrorist attacks...

EU Commissioner for External Affairs Chris Patten has successfully persuaded 12 of the MEPs that wanted to sign on to the petition to withdraw their support on the basis that he has seen no evidence of misuse of EU money...

Patten's unwillingness to investigate how the PA used the money it was given by the EU seems remarkably peculiar considering that the EU Court of Auditors declined last November to approve the EU's budget for the eighth year running, admitting it can only guarantee that 5 percent of taxpayers' money is being spent properly.
Item 3 - From AP via the Jerusalem Post reports:
The European Union will support giving UN weapons inspectors more time to do their work in Iraq if they ask for it, a top EU official said Saturday.
So there she stands, Old Europe - appeasing, shielding corruption, incapable of standing up to tyrants.

Rumsfled was right: OLD EUROPE indeed.
