Neil Macdonald replies to Ted Belman

Macdonald to participate and debate over 30 minutes

DEBATE BETWEEN NORMAN SPECTOR AND TONY BURMAN WILL PROCEED on CBCTV morning show called "CBC News: Sunday" between 10 am and 12:00 noon on January 19, 2003 - next Sunday.

You will be heartened to know that we are not only offering Mr. Spector more than the half hour he wants, we are offering to include both me and Mr. Burman in the debate, since we are the two people most often singled out by CBC's critics. We are quite proud of our coverage, and look forward to public discussion. I certainly hope Mr. Spector doesn't now decide to back away from our offer. (Fat Chance)

Original letter

This is an extremely important issue which Mr Burman and Mr Spector have agreed to debate. Important not only for Israel and its supporters but also for the CBC who need to either justify their stand or change it.

To allot only 15 minutes for the debate is to treat it with disrespect. I can't help but feel that the only reason to be so miserly with the time is to avoid an in depth debate. You appear to be going through the motions to have the appearance of a debate but no real debate. That's shameful. The debate needs about one hour and should go beyond the question of the use of the "T" word to an analysis of whether the CBC is living up to their mandate.

I believe you take the position that to call a Palestinian terrorist a terrorist is to take sides. Somehow you don't understand that to not call him a terrorist is to take sides because by doing so you are condoning terror.

It seems to me that everyone should always take the side of right or good rather than to close ones eyes to the atrocious.

Extend the debate, please

Ted Belman
